This weekend Masters from “Club Natacion Torrevieja” travelled to the Cabo de Palos Lighthouse on the Mar Menor to participate in the “1st International Travesia Cabo de Palos”.
The event hosted by “Club Natacion Masters Murcia” had entries from over 300 swimmers ,on the day 279 swimmers participated in the race. The race originally planned to circumnavigate the headland around the lighthouse a distance of 3 km but due to prevailing wind conditions on the headland, the race was re-organised to a direct swim to and from the lighthouse a distance of 2600 m.
European Champion and world runner up in open water swimming Margarita Dominguez Cabezas was guest swimmer in the race and took the overall 1st place in the event.
The rest of the competition was categorised by the normal National Swimming Federations Masters categories and ranking for the local competitors. Both Torrevieja swimmers Beth Altabas and Vicki Connolly won 1st place in their categories and Vicki came 2nd in the local competitors rankings, second only to the European swimmer Margarita.
Beth being the oldest swimmer in the event was by no means the slowest placed 202 out of the 279 swimmers that finished the race. Vicki was placed 7th of all female swimmers and 49th out of the total 279, both male and female.
