MOTORWAY TOLL ROAD OUTLOOK IMPROVING

The motorway toll road that runs from Alicante to Cartagena, via Torrevieja and the Orihuela Costa, will not be included in the public motorway company that the Ministry of Public Works is creating in order to rescue the roads at risk of bankruptcy.

The reason for this, according to the Minister of Public Works, Ana Pastor, is that this motorway has started to show signs of recovery, due to an increase in use. In the first nine months of this year, traffic has increased by 3.25%, accounting for an average of 18,789 vehicles per day.

In January of this year we reported how traffic using Spain´s toll motorway network has dropped by 33.6% in the last seven years, after a record of 23,909 average daily vehicles used the network in 2006. Over that same period, the Alicante area saw a drop of 733%, to 5,293 movements per day.

Part of the success of the 76.6 kilometre stretch could well be attributed to the increase in traffic visiting the Zenia Boulevard, but, the result of the increase in that traffic will undoubtedly mean that any calls or requests to remove the tolls in order to alleviate traffic on the N-332 will now be dismissed, on account of the apparent success.

The improved outlook has enabled a restructuring of debts and repayments on this motorway. During the winter months, the toll road advertises the cost to travel on the motorway is reduced, which they hope will encourage more drivers to choose the quieter and faster option.
