On Friday, the town hall of the Orihuela Costa replicated an event that had previously taken place in the city, by unveiling a banner in support of the victims of domestic violence.
Focussing on “Zero Tolerance” towards gender violence, the aim of the event was to raise awareness of the plight of the many people who suffer at the hands of an abusive partner, some of whom lose their lives, and others who continue to suffer in silence.
As a mark of respect, a minutes silence was held at 11:00, in the presence of members of the government team, including the councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, and the councillor for social welfare, Emilio Zaplana.
Zaplana explained that the initiative came about after the murder of an Orihuela resident in the summer, at the hands of her partner. Zaplana also explained how several activities are being held in the run up to the Day Against Gender Violence, which is the 25th of November. Meanwhile, Maricarmen Cabrera, president of the Clara Campoamor association, said that “the government must take the fight against gender violence, but citizens must contribute their grain of sand”.
