Spain has the worst record for pet abandonment in the whole of Europe, with a domestic animal left to its own devices every 3 minutes, on average.
According to a study by the Observatorio de la Fundación Affinity, 150,000 pets are abandoned each year, with the economic state of the country present in 15% of those cases, with struggling families no longer able to feed or care for their extended family members.
Summer is also one of the biggest causes, as families with pets find it difficult to plan a trip away with their animal, and so leave them behind.
Unexpected litters account for 19% of all cases, loss of interest in the animal is said to be the reason 10% are abandoned, 9% of people blame the end of the hunting season and 8% attribute the abandonment to behavioural problems.
The good news for many however is that due to the continual work of animal adoption centres and charities, as well as those families who care enough to make a difference, half of those animals abandoned end up being adopted, though that still leaves some 75,000 animals on the street each year.
