The Minister of Development, Public Works and Planning in the region of Murcia, Francisco Bernabé, has this week stated that “if all goes well” and that the problems relating to the competition award and compensation are resolved by the summer, then the opening of the new regional airport at Corvera could be a reality by the end of this year.
Although promises and commitments have been made for some time now, this latest announcement is seen as a firm commitment to the finalising of the project, as Bernabé said that there is “no turning back”.
It is believed that the new and final specifications for the airport operation will be completed by the end of February, and although there are “no official or unofficial meetings planned” a settlement on contract terms needs to be done in order to reintegrate the expenses.
Bernabé also stated that the government are prepared to meet the financial demands, but the government has to arbitrate formulas to make payments, either directly or indirectly.
With the backing of the Spanish airport authority AENA, now interested in operating the airport, Bernabé says that the government are confident that Corvera will become a “first class” airport with “superb facilities and traffic potential” with a future of significant growth.
