Vicki and Beth in Barcelona

Sunday 8th February saw the first ever Masters Long Distance National Spanish Championships in the olympic, 50m pool in the Can Llong Centre, Sabadell, Barcelona.

Twenty seven different clubs participated, and the competition was divided into masters categories of 20-29yrs, 30-39yrs , 40-49yrs, 50-59yrs, 60-69yrs and 70-79yrs .Club Natacion Torrevieja entered two swimmers, Beth Altabas and Vicki Connolly. For the first time ever the Masters were able to race over a distance of 3km’s, double the distance of the previous maximum race.

Beth started the day in the first race and 60 lengths later made a great time for the 3km swim of 58:29:50. This time earnt her the gold medal in the 70-79 years category. Vicki then followed in the next heat with a new best time of 48:24:13 and an equal split of 24 minutes for each 1500m’s. Unfortunately for Vicki this swim put her in 4th place in the 40-49 year category, just missing out on the bronze.

Both swimmers are awarded points for their results and this put “Club Natacion Torrevieja” in 8th position in the clubs rankings.

Both swimmers now have two weeks to focus upon their 5 different races in the XXI Winter Spanish National Masters Championships to be held in Pontevedra, Galicia 19th to the 22nd February.
