The severely malnourished mare was left tied to the centre’s rubbish skip

For the first time in it’s seven-year history, a neglected horse has been dumped at the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre in Rojales.

The severely malnourished mare was left tied to the centre’s rubbish skip with a piece of string, and was discovered early on Saturday morning (February 7).
“She’s so thin she was on the point of collapse and we really don’t think she would have survived much longer in the cold weather conditions we are having at the moment,” said centre co-founder Sue Weeding. We have named her Mystery.

“Word has obviously got out that we don’t have a horse trailer at the moment so they are walking them here.”

Even though we sometimes struggle to fund ourselves we are please that they now bring them to us and no longer leave them to die on a piece of waste ground.

We get calls from all over Spain for help which is why just before Christmas rescued horses seized by the police from Granada were sent to us as no one else would take them. All of this strengthens our determination to grow as an organisation to help more horses, ponies and donkeys.

The rescue centre is fundraising for a new horse trailer after the axle snapped on their 15-year-old trailer last month. One horse rescued after the breakdown had to be walked the 45 minutes home to the centre because there is currently no alternative form of transport.

Sue said the centre is raising funds to buy a new trailer which is low to the ground and therefore does not need a ramp as some of the horses we rescue are very weak and traumatised and going up a noisy ramp can be difficult for them and dangerous for us,” she says.

When we have the new trailer we will be able to collect Franky the donkey from Barcelona as his is ready to come home after his very successful surgery to straighten his front hoof

The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre welcomes any donations and sponsorships to help their cause. Every cent donated or spent in their eight charity shops across the Alicante province goes towards the feeding and care of the 89 horses, ponies and donkeys that live at the centre and to help with future rescues.

Donations of furniture, clothes and bric-a-brac to stock the shops are welcome. Please contact the charity shop hotline on 652 021 980 for more information about furniture pick-ups and volunteering.
The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre opens to the public for free on the first Sunday of every month between 1pm and 4pm. The first horse tour begins at 2pm.

EHCRC is located just outside Rojales at Partido Lo Garriga 59. For directions and details on how to sponsor a horse, please visit www.easyhorsecare.net.
