VB League

PREMIER DIVISION – 6th MARCH 2015 at Hacienda Riquelme Golf

The Vega Baja Premier Golf League was at another IRM course Hacienda Riquleme Golf for the penultimate league game of the season, when we left for the venue I was greeted with an illuminated flower of the dash panel, only to be told it was not a flower, but a snow flake and just 3 degrees.

It was quiet cold but thankfully the sun came out, and there were some decent scores to show for it.

Sadly when we arrived at the course for a 10:06 Tee Time the Café/Restaurante was not open until 10:00 and 64 players had to do without any sustenance. A pity a good course is let down by poor food and beverage support.

With this being the last but one game before the seasons closes, it was the time for a team to make a serious move to make life a little easier in the last game of the season.

With League leaders Las Ramblas just 3 points ahead of second place La Manga North a solid performance against third place Rockets was needed, but Rockets with new confidence fought hard but went down 1 – 3 and Las Ramblas amassed 150 points, but Rockets sole win was celebrated with Ron Chambers getting eleven points in the last four holes to ensure a 5 point win.

La Manga North in second place wanted to close the gap on the League and this they did by whitewashing bottom team Eurotoffs 4 – 0 and 28 points difference.
Paddy’s Point only just fell short of causing an upset drawing two of their games but losing two also with just seven points in it.

The normally strong La Manga RGA have had a mediocre season but showed resilience against the travelling Don Cayo and in a low scoring game only relinquished a draw and one point

The Hacienda Riquelme course greens coupled with the pin positions proved a tough test for even the single handicappers, but certainly a good day for the Ladies of Las Ramblas who form 40% of their team.

Those players that broke Par where Les Lane/Wayne Osguthorpe 37 points, Alan Ross/Martin Oakley 39 points (Club25 Serena G S) Malcolm Anderson/Ron Chambers 38 points, Larry Lambe/Rodney Smith 37 points (Rockets G S) Benedicte Kruse/John Wheeler 38 points, Bryan Neale/Olga Douglas 41 points, Barbara Hitchings/Mick Brentnall 38 points (Las Ramblas G S)

The final round of matches is on Friday 3rd April, at El Plantio Golf Resort near Alicante. With a two Tee start at 09:28 this is the final round of matches, and what a finish to the season with two teams holding the same points and wins. It is a testimony to the Vega Baja Premier Golf League’s handicapping and scoring system that no one team dominates.

But! What a cracking finale, to the season. Bring It On and yes it’s Good Friday, quite appropriate. Really looking forward to these two strong teams going head to head and to see if Las Ramblas can hold on to the trophy. WATCH THIS SPACE
