FOREIGN WORKERS GROW BY 35,000 IN MARCH

The number of foreign citizens registered with the Spanish Social Security system stood at 1,563,343 in March, an increase of 2.29% – or 34,974 National Insurance contributors – on the previous month.

When compared with 2014, the number of foreign workers has increased by 1.79% – the equivalent of 27,455 more NI contributors. This is the first March since 2008 in which the number of foreign workers has increased year-on-year. Previous years saw declines of up to -9.85% (2009).

The highest figures for foreign workers correspond to Romania (279,128), Morocco (194,762), China (90,296) and Ecuador (69,466). These countries are followed by Italy (66,404), Bolivia (56,975), the United Kingdom (53,014) and Colombia (51,349).

Autonomous regionsWhen compared with the previous month, the number of foreign NI contributors in March rose in all autonomous regions, except Extremadura (-1.45%) and Ceuta (-0.64%).

Compared with last year, the number of workers increased in Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, Castile-Leon, Castile-La Mancha, Catalonia, the Region of Valencia, Extremadura, the Region of Murcia, Navarre, the Basque Country, La Rioja and Melilla.

The figures recorded for March show that 919,864 of the total foreign citizens registered with the Spanish Social Security system are from countries outside of the European Union, while the remaining 643,479 are from EU countries.

The majority of foreign citizens are registered under the General Regime: 1,313,087 in total, a figure that includes the Special System for Agricultural Workers (195,948) and the Special System for Domestic Workers (207,414). This is followed by the Special Regime for Self-Employed Workers (245,854), the Special Regime for Seamen (4,132) and the Special Regime for Coal Workers (270).

Of the total foreign citizens in the system in March, 843,762 are men and 719,582 are women.
