Another severely neglected mare rescued from a Granada breeding yard by the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre has given birth to a healthy foal.

The birth on April 6 came just a week after a second mare from the same rescue operation also gave birth to a healthy colt. Visitors can meet both foals when the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre holds its free monthly open day. The next one is Sunday, May 3.

“It’s amazing that the foals have arrived so well considering the terrible condition the mares were in when we got them three months ago,” rescue centre co-founder Sue Weeding said.

Three malnourished mares and a stallion were rescued last December in the joint operation with Malaga-based rescue charity El Refugio del Burrito, which took at least four donkeys into custody. All animals found at the Granada property were severely malnourished and one foal was found dead.

It is believed the owner of the horses had the excuse that it was due to Spain’s ongoing financial crisis that caused him to stop feeding them.

Police prosecuted and a court order legally handed the animals over to the non-profit groups.

Last Saturday, police called at the centre for assistance with a pony found wandering in Heredades. Although the pony was in very good condition, he was taken to the rescue centre while his owner arranges to get him Identichipped, as required by law.

“As the pony was well cared for, we are happy to hand him back to his owner when the situation has been sorted out,” Sue said.

The centre will also permanently house an adult pony found abandoned and wandering alongside the AP7 Motorway near San Javier last Saturday, April 18. Police tracked down the owner in Almaria using the pony’s Identichip and will now look to pursue a prosecution.

“We know that we are working harder and harder by taking in so many new rescues but we think it’s fantastic that the police are taking all animal cases very seriously and we must continue to find ways to work with them,” she said.

The centre is now looking to open a second charity shop in Gran Alacant to help raise funds, adding to a network of eight shops across the Alicante province. Donations of furniture, clothes and bric-a-brac to stock any of the rescue centre charity shops are gratefully welcomed.

EHCRC is located just outside Rojales at Partido Lo Garriga 59.
