The Governing Board of the Orihuela Council has approved the transfer of the building plot from council to regional ownership for the proposed new junior school that is currently being prepared for tender as a replacement for the portable cabin complex currently accommodating Orihuela Costa’s junior and infant schoolchildren.

The announcement was made on Tuesday by municipal spokesperson Carolina Gracia. The plot is thought to be the area of land adjacent to the Los Dolses Commercial centre, just across the road from the current school and presently being used as an overspill car park.

In her statement Gracia noted that since 16 March, the Ministry of Education has invited tenders for new colleges at Beniarbeig, Nàquera Burriana, Ibi, Almàssera, Rojales and Villanueva de Castellón totaling over 35 million euros, but it has still not opened the process for Playas de Orihuela.

The current school has been in portable accommodation for over 13 years, by far the longest in the whole of the Valencian region. “We now hope that the situation and the tendering process will start moving forward” she said.
