The mayor arriving with the cllr for foreign residents

Throughout last Saturday morning hundreds of international residents gathered in Torrevieja’s Constitution Square to commemorate Europe Day, a celebration that takes place in the European Union every year on 9th May.

The anniversary recalls the noted Luxembourgish-born French statesman Robert Schuman, an independent political thinker and activist who was twice Prime Minister of France, and is regarded as one of the founders of the European Union, the Council of Europe and NATO.

The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, along with the Councillor for foreign Residents, Rosario Martinez Chazarra, attended the event which also involved a number of expat individuals and European Associations.

There were brief speeches of welcome in a variety of languages, which were followed by the raising of the EU flag by the mayor. While this took place it was accompanied by Beethoven’s ‘Ode to Joy’ sung by Francisco Moreno and Concepción Pérez.

After the flag-raising ceremony there were plenty of activities and entertainment in the square including Duende Andaluz from France, representatives of the Edinstvo Association from Bulgaria, the Phoenix Band from UK of course, a German Oompah Band and the British singer Chloe Leigh who performed the soundtrack of the film ‘Cucaracha Club’, which was shot entirely in the city of Torrevieja.
