The men were all of Spanish nationality and were aged between 27 and 48 years

Four men were arrested by Torrevieja’s Civil Guard last week on suspicion of three counts of theft and four of burglary, valued at 10,000 euros, of citrus fruit in Callosa de Segura.

The men were all of Spanish nationality and were aged between 27 and 48 years.

The investigation dates back to last April when complaints of the disappearing fruit were first made to the Guardia Civil. They began an investigation after being told of several robberies from farms in the Vega Baja.

The stolen fruit, was mainly oranges of the variety ‘Power-lane’. It was later sold at roundabouts on the roads of the Vega Baja, while many of the other stolen items, farm tools and equipment, were sold at recycling centers around the area.

The four men are said to have watched the farmers, taking notice of their lunch and supper breaks. It was during these times that most of the thefts occurred. However, on one occasion a farmer returned early surprising the thieves at which point he had to flee, almost being run over.

He was able to provide descriptions however following which the arrests were made. The alleged perpetrators have now been made available to the Court of Instruction No. 1 in Orihuela.
