In Thursday’s commemorative events recognising 40 years since the birth of Spain as a constitution, the mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón, advocated “working not only to maintain the constitutional consensus, but to expand and improve it.”

The head of Torrevieja council stands experienced in supporting unity, as he himself is from a lesser supported group, and stands at the top of a council run through consensus and collaboration, mostly.

The politicians were joined in a flag raising ceremony by members of other political groups, the security services and representatives from schools, public offices and residents who were celebrating the annual act.

In his speech, possibly his last one as leader of the government as elections in May are likely to mean a change to the political canvas, Dolón spoke of values in that “the Constitution was the integrating result of a consensus very difficult to reach at that historical moment”. That is why “it was the result of the agreement between the different political and social forces of an era in which we decided to win and succeed together, leaving aside our differences for the good of all, and making political and personal renouncement to find that great common denominator that is called coexisting in freedom “.
