A 51-year-old male with a European Arrest Warrant (EAW) issued by the Italian authorities for an organised robbery offence committed in 2020 has been apprehended by the National Police in Santa Pola (Alicante).
The National Police were alerted to the European Arrest Warrant by the requesting country after they suspected that the fugitive may have selected the province of Alicante as a place to evade justice in their home country, according to a statement from the force. Consequently, investigators initiated an investigation and located him in Santa Pola. He was apprehended subsequent to a police operation.
The fugitive had evaded Italian justice after being sentenced to a maximum term of ten years’ imprisonment for organised robbery, of which he has seven years, seven months, and 27 days remaining.The crimes were perpetrated in the Italian city of Fano in 2020.
The detainee and accomplices plundered over €4,500 from numerous gambling machines. Information sharing and coordination between the National Police and police authorities in other countries enabled the arrest. The Central Court of Instruction of the National Court, which is responsible for the implementation of the procedures for his subsequent extradition, was granted access to the detainee.
