The initiation of procedures to erect a monument in memory of the victims of the bombardment of August 25th, 1938, during the Spanish Civil War, perpetrated by the Italian fascist air force, was scheduled to be unanimously approved by the Torrevieja City Council on Monday, April 27th.
The municipal corporation’s dedication to the preservation of historical memory and the acknowledgement of those who endured that traumatic event is exemplified by this institutional agreement. The initiative’s objective is to establish a space for reflection and remembrance, as well as to serve as a symbol of the defence of democratic values, coexistence, and freedom.
The proposition was deliberated during the spokespeople’s meeting on April 10th. The agreement also encompasses the commencement of the process to commission this sculptural project from local artist Rafael Torres, utilising the sketches that were presented to the municipal representatives as a reference.
Eduardo Dolón, the mayor of Torrevieja, underscored the climate of consensus that was established among all political parties, emphasising that the unanimous agreement is indicative of a shared reverence for the city’s memory and for those who endured that tragic historical event.
He expressed his sincere gratitude to the representatives of the various municipal organisations for their willingness to transcend their differences and concentrate on the shared values that unite them as a community. “What is crucial today is Torrevieja’s acknowledgement of the victims of the bombing, with the respect and remembrance that this tragic episode in our history warrants,” he continued.
The city council emphasised the importance of preserving the city’s history in order to “learn from the past, build a more just present, and a better future for new generations.”
In particular, the prospective monument is intended to serve as a space for contemplation and remembrance of the ongoing armed conflicts that exist in the world today.
