Emergency services from the Alicante Provincial Firefighters Consortium were called into action yesterday, Tuesday May 5th, to rescue a 90-year-old man in Calpe. The elderly hiker had been climbing the iconic Penyal d’Ifac when he suffered a fall just 50 metres from the summit.
The incident occurred when the man slipped, resulting in an injury to his knee that prevented him from continuing his ascent or descending the rock safely on foot. Due to the difficult terrain and the casualty’s location near the peak, a mountain rescue helicopter was deployed to the scene.
Upon arrival, the rescue team stabilised the man before winching him into the aircraft. He was then flown to the designated helipad at the Penyal d’Ifac, where a Basic Life Support ambulance was waiting to provide further medical assistance.
According to sources from the Firefighters Consortium, despite the fall and the knee injury, the man was found to be in generally good health.
