The municipality of Rojales is set to celebrate its traditional San Isidro pilgrimage on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th May. The Department of Festivities has organised a weekend of events in honour of the patron saint of farmers, which will take place between the Malecón del Soto and the El Recorral natural park.
The festivities begin on Saturday afternoon at the Malecón del Soto, with children’s workshops and bouncy castles starting at 17:00. Later in the evening, at 21:00, the association Alcachofa Vega Baja will host a popular “torrá” of artichokes, offering a tasting of the local produce to celebrate the agricultural heritage of the region. This will be followed by a night of music and dancing, featuring the Feria de Sevillanas and live performances.
On Sunday 17th May, the pilgrimage itself begins at 08:00. The image of San Isidro will be carried from the parish church to the El Recorral park. This traditional journey usually includes a stop in Pueblo Lucero where participants are offered traditional rolls and mistela. Once at the park, a mass is celebrated at the saint’s hermitage, followed by a day of communal meals and celebrations in the countryside.
The local council has invited children to participate in the event by riding on the specially decorated floats provided for the journey to and from the park. This annual event remains one of the most popular and well-attended pilgrimages in the Vega Baja region, bringing together hundreds of residents and visitors.
