The local council in Torrevieja plans to completely remove all roosters, hens and chickens from its public streets by the end of this year. The operation is scheduled to conclude after the summer season, coinciding with the completion of the contract awarded to the company handling the task.
Concha Sala, the city’s Councillor for Animal Protection, explained in an interview with Europa Press that the removal of these birds is now at a “very advanced” stage, though she noted that the issue is “not entirely” resolved just yet.
Sala highlighted that the birds are being rounded up on a weekly basis, revealing that 50 specimens were caught during the previous week alone. She also noted that the contracted company was given a one-year period to carry out the operation. The contract to capture the birds was originally awarded at the end of last year.
