Two men aged 22 and 24 have been arrested in Elche after attempting to steal a gold chain from a passerby. The suspects were also found to be carrying various items of possible illicit origin, including more jewellery, watches, tools, car keys, and two knives for which they could not prove ownership.
According to information from the Elche City Council press office, the incident occurred on Avenida de la Libertad, although the exact time of the event was not specified. The victim quickly alerted the emergency services by calling 092 to report that someone had just tried to snatch a chain from around their neck. This prompt call allowed several local police patrols to mobilise, and they located two individuals matching the description shortly after.
Upon arriving at the scene, the victim identified one of the suspects as the perpetrator of the attempted robbery. Furthermore, the victim accurately described a knife that the suspect allegedly had in his back pocket, a detail that was subsequently verified by the officers during the intervention.
During a search of the belongings of the suspects, police officers discovered various pieces of jewellery, watches, tools, car keys, and two bladed weapons. Because the men were unable to explain the origin of these items, officers suspected they might be stolen. Both individuals were arrested as alleged perpetrators of robbery with violence and intimidation and were subsequently taken to police headquarters for processing.
Following the incident, the Elche Local Police have reminded the public of the importance of immediately reporting any robbery, attempted purse snatching, or suspicious activity in public spaces to 092. Officers noted that a quick description of the events, the individuals involved, and their direction of escape can be crucial in facilitating rapid police action and securing the arrest of those responsible.
