Torrevieja Local Police and the Guardia Civil have launched an investigation following the discovery of a body in the water off La Mata beach early yesterday afternoon, Monday 8th June.
The alarm was raised by two paddle surfers who spotted the lifeless body floating in the sea near the La Mata canal. This area is located at the northern end of the beach, close to the municipal border with Guardamar del Segura.
Local Police officers quickly deployed to the scene and initiated the standard protocol for such incidents. The recovery operation proved particularly complex due to the specific conditions in which the body was found.
Guardia Civil leading the investigation
Guardia Civil officers subsequently arrived at the beach to take charge of the initial procedures. They have launched an inquiry to identify the deceased individual and determine the exact circumstances surrounding the death. Following the recovery, the body was moved from the shoreline, where it had been temporarily covered by a thermal blanket.
Torrevieja Local Police expressed their gratitude to the members of the public who responsibly and immediately notified the authorities, while also praising the professionalism of all the public services involved in the operation. At this stage, the Guardia Civil Command in Alicante has not released any further details regarding the ongoing investigation.
Context of recent coastal discoveries
In recent weeks, the discovery of bodies washed ashore by the waves has frequently been linked to migrants attempting to reach the Spanish coast from Algeria in small boats, a situation potentially exacerbated by recent intense easterly winds. However, authorities stress that this link remains unconfirmed in this specific case.
There were no active alerts for missing swimmers on La Mata beach or in neighbouring Guardamar del Segura, although emergency services in Guardamar had faced a constant stream of rescues over the weekend, particularly on Saturday, involving people who were struggling to get out of the water.
