Torrevieja is starting the 2026/2027 academic year with 17,002 enrolled students and a dozen municipal educational initiatives. The local councillor for education, Ricardo Recuero, presented the details, infrastructure updates, and key novelties for the upcoming term, which begins tomorrow, Wednesday, 9th September, and concludes on 18 June 2027. Local non-school days have been designated for 7th December 2026, 8th February 2027, and 3rd May 2027.
Student numbers span from two-year-old nursery groups up to the local conservatory. Breakdown figures show 107 children in two-year-old infant classes, 2,107 in infant education aged three to five, 5,904 in primary education, and 4,151 in compulsory secondary education. Higher education and adult learning levels comprise 1,068 baccalaureate students, 1,010 vocational training students, 862 adult education participants, 1,535 official language school students, and 258 music conservatory pupils.
During August, the education department managed 303 late enrolments outside the standard registration period. Of these, 201 involved infant and primary pupils, while 102 were for compulsory secondary education. Managing late registrations remains an ongoing challenge due to the municipality’s continuous population growth.
Key infrastructure efforts in Torrevieja include the ongoing tendering process for renovations at CEIP Virgen del Carmen, the drafting of the project for IES Las Lagunas, and the upcoming delegation of powers expected for Colegio Maestro Lafuente to advance its administrative processing.
The council will implement ten main lines of work this year. These encompass a municipal programme against school absenteeism run with social services, a multidisciplinary youth team, and mental health coordination with the health department. Nautical physical education lessons will be delivered through the “El Cole en el Mar” scheme, while weather and astronomy workshops will run via a collaboration with Proyecto Mastral. Environmental sustainability projects will take place alongside AGAMED.
Anti-bullying efforts will continue through the “No Te Calles…” initiative, alongside the Academic Excellence Awards and the “Reinventar la Educación” conference scheduled for 6th March 2027. Support for parents will be provided via the local Family School. Additional environmental adaptations to schools include patio shading, greening, and safe school routes.
Financial support will feature four municipal study grant schemes covering university expenses for those studying outside the municipality, academic excellence awards, school transport, and direct aid for textbooks and supplies. Additionally, six urban bus routes will now connect various neighbourhoods directly to the municipality’s seven secondary schools with morning trips timed between 07:00 and 07:58.
