Early yesterday morning, Wednesday 17th June, a highly tense scene unfolded in San Bartolomé following an attempted ram-raid at Tobacconist Number 2, located in this Orihuela district. The suspected perpetrators, far from achieving their objective, ended up fleeing on foot after staging a manoeuvre that was as spectacular as it was unsuccessful.
According to initial reports from the scene, two hooded individuals used a forklift truck in an attempt to tear down the facade of the establishment and gain access inside. However, the plan went wrong from the very beginning when the vehicle became wedged in a corner of the premises, preventing the thieves from continuing with the robbery.
The loud noise caused by the impact alerted numerous local residents, who looked out of their homes upon hearing the crash. Several witnesses claim to have seen two hooded men abandoning the scene and running off in the direction of the CV-91 road.
The damage has been limited to the front of the tobacconist. The scene left a highly unusual image, with the forklift truck embedded next to the establishment and material damage as the only result of a rather botched burglary attempt.
