A dispute allegedly sparked by jealousy nearly ended in tragedy in Alicante on Sunday morning, 26th July. The National Police arrested a 54-year-old Moroccan man early Sunday morning for attempting to assault his ex-partner and stabbing a man who was with her and came to her defence. An 18-year-old woman, the daughter of the 55-year-old Spanish man who was stabbed in the neck, also suffered a knife wound to her shoulder during the attack.
The alleged assailant was arrested by agents of the Citizen Assistance Group and investigators from the Violent Crime Group of the Provincial Judicial Police Brigade continued on Monday to carry out the proceedings before putting the arrested man at the disposal of the court in Alicante as the alleged perpetrator of an attempted homicide.
The incident occurred shortly before 12:30 a.m. this past Sunday. The National Police emergency call centre received a report that a person had been stabbed in the neck on Deportista Ramón Mendizábal Street in Alicante. Officers from the Citizen Security Brigade were immediately dispatched and upon arrival found the victim bleeding. Several people had already restrained the assailant on the ground after disarming him before he could continue stabbing the victim. Local police officers also responded to the scene.
According to information gathered by the National Police, the man arrested for attempted murder allegedly acted out of jealousy. Initially, around 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, he reportedly tried to physically assault his ex-wife in a bar, and when a man who was with her came to her defence, he left. However, he returned hours later armed with two knives and stabbed the victim in the neck in the street, also injuring a daughter who tried to help her father.
Emergency medical services arrived at the scene to attend to the injured, especially the 55-year-old man who was in more serious condition due to the stab wound to his neck. The two knives used in the attack were seized and taken to police headquarters for forensic analysis. One of the knives had a 17-centimetre blade and the other a 12-centimetre blade, according to sources close to the investigation.
