Orihuela City Council, through the Department of Commerce led by councillor Vicente Pina, will launch a new consumer voucher scheme before the end of the year, bringing an economic boost of nearly 2.5 million euro to local businesses in the municipality.
The initiative is made possible thanks to a maximum grant of 836,833 euro allocated to Orihuela under a funding call from the Alicante Provincial Council, alongside a municipal contribution of 400,000 euro from the local council. The provincial scheme has an overall budget of 25 million euro across the province to support town councils in encouraging shopping at neighbourhood businesses and stimulating local trade.
Vicente Pina highlighted that the scheme represents vital support for the commercial sector in Orihuela, noting that the council is making a significant financial commitment to back businesses that generate employment and keep neighbourhoods and outlying villages lively.
Under the consumer voucher system, every euro provided by the public administration is matched by another euro spent by the shopper. As a result, local establishments will receive double the public investment, resulting in a direct sales boost of close to 2.5 million euro for local shops. Pina described the initiative as one of the most effective measures to support small businesses, offering families savings while driving commercial activity across the entire municipality.
