The Traffic Subsector of the Guardia Civil in Ourense has located and identified a driver who fled from officers at speeds exceeding 200 km/h with his vehicle headlights turned off on the A-52 motorway, near the municipality of Allariz.
The incident began during a routine speed and compliance checkpoint conducted by the Road Safety Investigation Unit. Officers detected a car travelling at high speed without mandatory insurance. When signalled to stop using acoustic and visual signals, the driver refused to pull over and instead steered directly towards the patrol vehicle, forcing officers to carry out an emergency evasive manoeuvre to prevent a head-on collision.
A pursuit followed over seven kilometres, during which the motorist made reckless overtaking and illegal lane changes. The driver then turned off the vehicle lights completely and continued at more than 200 km/h for at least 15 kilometres in total darkness. Due to the severe danger posed to other road users, officers decided to suspend the direct chase on safety grounds.
Subsequent checks revealed that the car was stolen and that a restraining order was in place against the driver in relation to the vehicle owner. A week after the incident, the Guardia Civil impounded the car for forensic examination, finding that the tyres were severely worn. Identifying the suspect took several months as his official residence details were not updated with traffic authorities.
The driver, who had no valid driving licence due to having lost all his points, now faces four criminal charges covering offences against road safety, authority, and property.
