An emergency medical technician has reported a physical assault that took place during the early hours of yesterday morning, Wednesday 29th July, in Benidorm. The worker was attending to an intoxicated patient in Calle Gerona, located within the town’s popular nightlife district, when the attack occurred.
The technician, named Amaia, explained that the incident left her with physical injuries and a severe psychological impact, leaving her currently off work on sick leave. The event unfolded after emergency services received a call regarding a man lying on the public street outside a nightlife venue. Whilst her colleague went to retrieve a stretcher from the vehicle, she stayed alongside the patient to assess his condition. As she attempted to help him sit up, the man punched her directly in the face, causing her to bleed and triggering an anxiety attack.
A nearby police patrol acted quickly to arrest the alleged attacker, even as the situation grew increasingly tense due to the violent behavior of people surrounding the scene.
According to the technician, such episodes are a frequent occurrence during summer nights in Benidorm. She stated that she and her colleagues regularly endure insults, threats, and attempted violence from drunk individuals. Consequently, she is calling for ambulances to be automatically accompanied by police officers whenever they are dispatched to high-conflict nightlife zones.
Ramón Guirado, a representative for the Central Sindical Obrera union in Marina Baixa, stressed that this was not an isolated incident. He noted that other health workers in the service have suffered recent assaults, many of which go unreported. He criticised the lack of specific safety protocols to protect emergency crews during high-risk calls, psychiatric transfers, or transport of individuals in custody. The union representative demanded that ambulance crews refrain from entering conflict areas until police officers arrive whilst also highlighting the intense workload in Marina Baixa during the summer months.
