Torrevieja City Council is preparing to award the contract for the design and construction management of a new safe school route connecting the El Acequión and Inmaculada Concepción primary schools.
The Local Government Board will assign the 50,820 euro contract, which includes VAT, to architect Jesús Madrid. The winning proposal represents a 24.63 per cent reduction compared to the original tender budget.
The initiative aims to create a safe urban corridor measuring approximately 800 metres, used every day by more than 1,000 pupils. It will span several streets, including Urbano Arregui, Ciudad de Barcelona, Bilbao, Policarpo, José Hurtado Romero, and Avenida Diego Ramírez Pastor.
Rather than building a new route from scratch, the scheme will reorganise the existing road layout to prioritise pedestrians. Planned works include widening pavements, creating safer crossings, removing physical barriers, and installing a continuous green buffer of vegetation to separate walking paths from vehicular traffic.
This green space is intended to increase safety while providing shade and protection during the hottest months of the year in Torrevieja. The pathway will also features a clear visual identity to help children and families easily navigate the route between the two educational centres.
The project is structured around five main goals: enhancing road safety, ensuring universal accessibility, encouraging shared public use, promoting active travel, and expanding green infrastructure.
Local authorities emphasized that the corridor will benefit the wider community, including families, elderly residents, and individuals with reduced mobility. It will also link up with the existing pedestrian and cycle network running from La Veleta through the San Roque and Acequión districts, offering a safe alternative to car travel across this part of the city.
Co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund, the initiative falls under Torrevieja’s Local Integrated Development Strategy within the 2021–2027 European funding programme.
Once the technical plans are finalised, the local council will move forward with the tender for the physical construction works.
