Torrevieja is set to hold the inaugural edition of its Health Fair on 29 October, bringing together more than 30 stands from hospitals, associations, pharmacies and emergency services at the International Auditorium. The event in Torrevieja will combine educational activities aimed at students during the morning with a schedule open to the general public in the afternoon.
The Councillor for Health Prevention and Promotion, Rosa Cañón, presented the initiative alongside public health director José Antonio García and municipal technician Laura Lorenza. The objective is to bring health and social resources available in Torrevieja closer to the population and promote healthy habits through practical activities, workshops and conferences.
The fair stems from work carried out in intersectoral health tables, which meet every four months with entities, professionals and organisations from the health sector. This gathering will translate that collaboration into an open space where attendees can resolve queries, learn about services and acquire knowledge related to healthcare.
Topics covered will include nutrition, first aid, mental health, disease prevention and physical activity, alongside issues concerning addictions, visual and auditory health, and care for people with disabilities.
The Torrevieja University Hospital will feature several spaces dedicated to breastfeeding, midwifery, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, blood donation and primary care services. The Quirón Hospital will also participate. Meanwhile, Public Health from Orihuela will provide information on breast and colon cancer screening programmes, and the Cancer Association will have a presence at the gathering.
Participating pharmacies, through the Pharmacists Association, will offer specific content on nutrition, skin care, acne and dental hygiene. Mental health and addiction prevention will also feature prominently, with participation from the municipal unit for addictive behaviour prevention, APAEX, Esperanza and Vida, ADIEM and SASEM. ASIMEPP will offer information on fibromyalgia, while ONCE and FESORD will present topics related to visual disability, deaf people and sign language.
Emergency services will take part as firefighters and Civil Protection showcase their work, including a practical demonstration of an intervention on an accident vehicle and the rescue of injured people. Red Cross will run first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation activities.
The morning programme runs from 10.00 to 13.30 and targets third-year students of Compulsory Secondary Education, alongside healthcare vocational training pupils. Miguel Assal will deliver a conference titled “The experience that saves lives in the first 5 minutes” at 11.00, followed by a rescue and accident response demonstration by firefighters at 12.00.
The fair reopens in the afternoon from 17.30 to 21.30 for the general public. The day culminates with a conference by family doctor and communicator Sara Marín Berbell at 20.00, titled “I wasn’t like that before: an expedition through how the female body changes over the years”, addressing physical and hormonal transformations in women. Attendance is free, though invitations must be obtained through Cultura Torrevieja.
