The Guardia Civil has located a 42-year-old woman and a 34-year-old man in the province of Seville who are under investigation following the alleged sale of jewellery valued at more than 60.000€, which included a 40.000€ gold watch, allegedly stolen from a home in Finestrat, Alicante.
The investigation began when the victim, who had recently moved home, used an online classifieds platform to hire a woman for domestic cleaning duties. Following an interview, they agreed on working hours, according to a statement from the armed forces.
However, the working relationship lasted only a few weeks. At the beginning of September, the employee terminated the contract, claiming she needed to care for a family member admitted to a hospital. Shortly afterwards, the homeowner filed a complaint after noticing that the jewellery was missing.
From the outset, enquiries conducted by officers focused on the employee, and they managed to discover that the pieces had been sold at a gold-buying establishment just days before she left her job.
By mid-September, investigators located all of the stolen jewellery at the shop. The pieces remained in their original state, except for the high-end gold watch valued at about 40.000€, which had been broken into three pieces to be sold as scrap gold. The items were returned to their rightful owners three days later.
An analysis of the sales also revealed the potential involvement of a man who had apparently disposed of some of the pieces. Once both suspects were located in the province of Seville, assistance was requested from the Guardia Civil post in Castilblanco de los Arroyos, which located the suspects there.
The 42-year-old woman, who had a prior record for offences of a similar nature, and the 34-year-old man, who face accusations of theft, handling stolen goods, and damage, were placed at the disposal of the Civil and Investigation Section of the Benidorm Court of Instance acting on duty, to which the compiled proceedings have been forwarded.
