MARQ OUTLINES PLANS FOR TEN EXCAVATION SITES

It is said to be one of the most comprehensive and rigorous programmes ever carried out in the Region

Not everyone appreciates or is even aware of the work that the Archaeological Museum of Alicante (MARQ) carry out on local archeological sites with most people thinking that the operation is centred purely on the Alicante museum.

However just last week the institution announced details of its annual plan of excavations for 2015 saying that between May and September it will operate ten archaeological sites in the province involving about 120 volunteers from student groups to graduates in History and Archaeology.

And not all will be Spanish with many being drawn into the region from universities in the USA, UK and South America.

A spokesman for the museum said that the objective is to pursue the investigation of prehistory, Iberian culture, Roman and medieval-modern history at a number of strategic points in the province.

The team of archaeologists from Alicante museum sites will operate at Cabezo Pardo and Cabezo de los Ojales in San Isidro, Granja de Rocamora and Albatera; the slopes of the castle in Callosa de Segura; la Cova del Randero in Pedreguer; Cova de l’Or in Beniarrés; el Penyal d’Ifach in Calpe; la Bahía de l’Albufereta and el Tossal de Manises in Alicante; l’Illeta dels Banyets in El Campello; Barranco del Juncaret in Mutxamel and la parcela (plot) 604 of the Industrial estate 16 in Monforte del Cid.

The Deputy Councillor for Culture, Juan Bautista Rosello, said that the program of archaeological excavations "is considered by professionals as one of the most comprehensive and rigorous in the Region, both for the number of historical periods covered, and for the vast area that it covers".

To carry out these tasks the operation will be provided with logistical support from the municipalities of Callosa de Segura, Calpe, Pedreguer and Monforte del Cid as a result of by several bilateral agreements with the local councils and the Provincial government of Alicante.

The deputy, aalso went on to thank the work of the many volunteers who will be drafted in to help with these tasks, while also getting hands-on training that will provide them with greater exphat will better equip them in their future professional activities.

Work at the Cabezo Pardo and Cabezo de los Ojales sites in San Isidro will be concentrated above ground while that on the slopes of the Callosa Castle will be concentrated in the lower zones where it is hoped to complete exhumations from the Bronze Age

The prehistoric cave la Cova del Randero in Pedreguer will see work continue in the central gallery and the entrance while in the Cova de l’Or (Neolithic) volunteers will attempt to complete the mapping of the entire fissure.

The Penyal d’Ifach, one of the most strategic points in the province and this will be the eleventh season of excavations in the Natural Park

In the Bay of Alicante the work will consist of underwater exploration and mapping of an Underwater Archaeological Chart, while in the Tossal de Manises the objective will be to locate the West Gate of the old city, located on the side of the reservoir that descends to the sea.

Finally, the Barranco del Juncaret will see the archaeological documentation of the few preserved remains of a Roman cistern, while the Industrial area 16 Monforte will see excavations carried out on an adjoining plot discovered an ancient cemetery dating back to Iberian times.

Alicante Provincial Council have said that they will allocate a total of 119,500 euros to supplement the archaeological work in order to provide better documentation of the findings.

The work will get underway in May, with the collaboration of the CV MARQ Foundation. Also involved will be the Architecture Council of Alicante which will help to coordinate the work and the health and safety aspects of the activities being carried out on the ten different sites
