The latest data

Despite the city centre resembling a “ghost own” of businesses that have shut down one after the other, and continual stories of ex-pats “returning home”, the residential population of Torrevieja continues to grow, especially with foreign residents, according to the latest figures released by the municipal register office.

In the last year, the total registered population of Torrevieja, according to data from the National Statistics Institute, has increased once more, now having a total of 105,205 people on the census records. Of this figure, around 53% are citizens of a foreign origin.

This latest data makes Torrevieja, once more, the third most important city in the Alicante province, behind Elche and Alicante itself, and the fifth most important across the Valencia region.

Elche is still in third place across the region, but the population there has dropped from 230,587 last year to 230,224 in this.

Orihuela also continued to grow, now having a registered population of 91,260, compared to 90.087 of last year, with slightly more men than women, 45,752 compared to 45,508.

Algorfa goes from 4,755 to 5,004, Almoradí from 19,601 to 19,788, Benijófar sees a sizeable drop from 4,207 to 3,514, Bigastro increases slightly from 6,719 to 6,730, Day Nueva sees a slight drop from 1,996 to 1,956, whereas Day Vieja increases slightly from 758 to 770.

We also see a slight drop in Dolores going from 7,362 to 7,314, Guardamar also drops from 17,138 to 16,957, Rojales falls from 22,006 to 21,686, San Fulgencio climbs from 12,529 to 12,688, San Miguel drops from 7,602 to 7,012, Santo Pola increases from 33,965 to 34,134, Pilar de la Horadada goes from 23,403 slightly up to 23,670 and Montesinos drops from 5,203 to 5,043.

The Valencia region overall has increased in population size by an additional 228,786 inhabitants, increasing to 5,113,815 registered residents. As for the provinces, Alicante now has 1,945,642 inhabitants, an increase of 120,378, Valencia has 2,566,477, up by 79,994, and Castellón has 601,699, also having grown by 28,417 as of the latest data released.

Once again though, one of the most significant characteristics that makes Torrevieja stand out is the number of immigrants who live within the boundaries, proportionately more than any other place in the area, and with the Brits still dominating first place. Once in second place were the Germans but for the second year running they hold the third place position, as the continually increasing Russian residents hold second place.
