The mayor of Orihuela, Monseratte Guillén, along with his team, continues to insist that the regional government in Valencia honour and finish plans which were already begun, including the new school which is likely to be finished by the end of this year, and the emergency coordination centre, amongst others.

Work has also restarted on a number of projects approved before the New Year. Most noticeably are the three new footbridges to allow pedestrians safe access over main roads. The La Regia bridge has the supports on one side of the road completed, the other side will be finished shortly. The access problems on one side of the bridge over the motorway near the Zenia Boulevard have been resolved, with permission now granted by the land owner for the bridge to be constructed on the other side, but leading the way is the footbridge in the vicinity of the unfinished school, which has this week taken delivery of the bridge parts, these are now being assembled with all three projects still on target for the March completion date.

The 3 Kings Parade on the Orihuela Costa was considered a success once again. Not least for the fact it cost only half the budget of last year´s parade, and included the addition of a third float for the kings. Although many could argue that the 10,000 euro of public money could have been used in other ways, it shows how an event can still take place whilst acknowledging austerity measures at the same time. Not without a minor panic at the start when one of the floats wouldn´t start, the event soon got underway as the parade made its way through the eager and excited crowds to the end point of Zenia Boulevard, where hundreds more were awaiting the arrival of the Kings whilst local singer Rebecca Holt entertained them. The Councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, offered her thanks and praise to everybody who got involved and came to see the parade.

Administrative steps have been made relating to the closed beach footpath at Cabo Roig, where there is a considered risk of debris falling from the cliff top above. It has been deemed that the owner of the property above is liable for creating a retaining wall to prevent further damage and that owner, as well as a few of the neighbours who are also considered to be the cause of the issue, are being contacted with instructions of remedial action that must be taken. In the event that this action is not carried out, the town hall is able to do the work and could end up charging the owners for the repairs carried out.

The environmental department has created a database of palm trees throughout Orihuela and the coast, detailing the condition of every tree that exists. The reason is that they can no go about maintaining those that are damaged and removing any which may have become or are at risk of infection from the dreaded Red Palm Weevil.

The Councillor for Heritage, Antonio Zapata, has announced plans to hire a company dedicated to ensuring energy efficiency compliance in municipal buildings, accordance with regulations and with the aid of European funding, which he hopes will result in savings of between 200,000 and 300,000 euro per year on electricity bills. The bill for street lighting along costs the municipality 4.5 million euro, so any savings across the energy provision sector will make a difference to the overall costs to the public purse.

The main access road into and out of Orihuela city at the Bigastro end has been closed to traffic once again. The route with runs under the railway line was closed as part of the high speed train works, but reopened in December. The route has now been closed once more, to enable more work to be carried out, angering business owners who say that they have suffered considerable damage to trade whilst the roadway was closed. Motorists are advised that diversions are in place and signposted.

The department of sports has announced that the fourteenth City of Orihuela half marathon, organized in association with the Tragamillas Athletics Club, will take place on the 9th of February, starting at 10:30 from the Avenida de España. The race is open to both Spanish and foreign runners, subject to conditions, with veterans, senior and junior categories for both male and female entrants. More information can be obtained from the website, www.tragamillas.org, where registration can also be carried out.
