Scientific analysis carried out on various pigeon corpses found dead on Murcia´s streets reveal that they have been poisoned by an agricultural pesticide.
Around 150 dead birds were found in various locations across the city on Wednesday of this week, with specimens found on plaza Santo Domingo, la Glorieta and Puente de Manterola being put to the test.
Councillor for health, María del Carmen Pelegrín, explained that having carried out the tests, the scientists conclude the cause of death of have been a pesticide, namely methomyl, which has been in use since was introduced in 1966, later to come under strict control, because of its high toxicity to humans
Now the cause of death has been established, the Local Police of Murcia have opened an investigation to try to ascertain responsibility for the event, as well as checking on any further risk.
Pelegrín continued to explain how a number of residents had reported birds dead on their balconies, all of which have been collected, before stressing that although there is a risk because of the poisoning, there is no danger to public health.
