This weekend brought 131 swimming clubs and 1045 “masters swimmers” throughout Spain together to compete in the “XX Spanish Winter Masters Open National Championships” held from 20th to 23 February in the Municipal pool, Son Hugo in Palma, Majorca.
One of the most competitive events of the masters calendar, tensions were high and the noise levels to match!! Club Natacion Torrevieja were pleased to have 4 of their masters compete in 18 individual events and one mixed relay. The team won 14 medals from their 18 individual events and a 6th pace in the +200 yrs 4 x 50 freestyle relay event.
The first day of events got off to a flying start with Beth Altabas and Vicki Connolly winning gold medals in their age groups in the 800m Freestyle event. Vicki knocking a further 9 seconds off her previous best time in Barcelona last year (11:48: 30).
Friday the girls were joined by Paul Matthews who flew into his 3 races of the day with a gold in the 50m Butterfly and 100m Backstroke and silver in his 100m Freestyle event. Not to be beaten the girls matched his results with gold in the 100m backstroke and 100m Freestyle events for Beth and a bronze medal for Vicki in her 100m Freestyle event. New personal bests were set in most races!!
Saturday the 4th member of the team arrived and Rafael Alonso had two good swims in his 400m and 200m freestyle events. Vicki continued in her winning ways with two more medals in the 400m and 200m freestyle events winning silver medals in both events and new personal bests to match.
Beth continued with the medals in her 400m Freestyle winning gold and Paul in his 200m Freestyle winning bronze. Last of the day was the 4 x 50m Freestyle relay – tired from previous races the team put out a strong swim and won 6th place, out of 12 teams in the + 200 yrs age category.
Sunday, the last morning of racing more medals were won. Beth won gold in her 100m individual medley and Paul 4th place. Rafael knocked 6 seconds off his 50m backstroke time and Vicki with a new personal best won bronze in the 50m Freestyle event. The team now focus upon the Summer Spanish Masters Open National Event to be held at the end of June in Jerez.
