Police from Pilar de la Horadada recovered several coils of copper wire early last Friday morning weighing 300 kg. They were found in the boot of an abandoned car in the village of Lo Romero having been stolen the previous night.
Police were initially alerted to the presence of a suspicious vehicle on a road adjacent to the golf course. When they attempted to challenge the driver the vehicle sped off. Despite losing the vehicle as they gave chase they found it a few minutes later abandoned in a side street.
When they opened the boot they discovered the copper wire which is thought to have been stolen overnight from local street lighting.
In recent months police patrols from Pilar de la Horadada are thought to have prevented a number of thefts in the rural and agricultural areas surrounding the town, many of which are especially vulnerable.
The councilor responsible for security, Lancharro Francisco, said that police patrols are particularly important and in recent months they have resulted in the detention of at least two individuals for similar crimes.
He said that thefts of copper are usually carried out at night, so during periods of darkness there is additional monitoring in these zones. “We are particularly sensitive to this type of crime because damage to electrical distribution boxes and streetlights creates a great deal of inconvenience and can be extremely lengthy and expensive to rectify.
