Officers from the Guardia Civil have arrested 2 people for dealing in counterfeit electric vehicles, with fraudulently acquired profits possibly being in the region of one million euro.
According to the notes from the investigation, some 300 vehicles had been imported into Spain and then altered to enable them to be passed off as originals from the Chinese manufacturer.
The investigation began following a complaint from an official distributor in Spain of the originally branded electric vehicles and accessories.
During a raid in a workshop in Alicante, officers discovered what they described as rudimentary tools for painting fake logos, as well as special devices for masking the original manufacturer of the inferior items.
The company is believed to have been trading for over a year in the area, dealing in electric bikes and motorbikes, selling them under the trademarked brand of the Chinese company.
The two people arrested are said to be residents of Alicante, identified by the initials JMB and MMM, who are suspected of being involved in crimes of fraud, forgery and against intellectual property.
The Guardia Civil have not ruled out more arrests and charges, as they have also identified a network of at least 23 other individuals involved in the sale and distribution of the electric bikes and motorbikes, plus their accessories, having already identified 298 vehicles in the scam.
