FIESTAS DE MOROS Y CRISTIANOS CRAFT FAIR IN PORT OF XÀBIA

Every year round the middle of July the port of Jávea (or Xàbia as we now officially must call it) celebrates its Fiestas de Moros y Cristianos; traditionally these include a medieval market.

This year the fair promises to be bigger and better than those of the last few years; more than 40 craft stalls will be set up in the streets behind the Masymas (Sertorio and Andrés Lambert) offering "Artesanía de Autor".

For the first time the market is organised by Amata, the same craft association that also sets up the summer fair that runs every night on the sea front of the Port.

Amata only admits original craft work (no imported goods, nothing bought from the wholesalers) and thus provides visitors with a good opportunity to buy something different as a souvenir or present. There will be more than 40 stalls displaying a goodly variety of hand made goods.

Some of the work on sale is just pleasant to look at, but other work is handsome as well as useful, such as hand made pottery, leather belts and handbags, lamps, clothing, jewellery boxes and mirrors.

Here is a chance to own something really exclusive without having to pay inflated gallery prices.

You can watch a number of craftsmen at work: Thomas painting T-shirts, Diego decorating boxes with filigree paper and Aitor showing his skills as wood carver.

Often they can add to or change part of their design to suit the taste or need of a potential customer – a name, another colour or perhaps a slightly different size.

To sustain the visitor there will be a medieval tavern and an Arab tea tent, as well as stalls with sausages, cheeses and preserved fruit prepared using traditional recipes, while the very young can have a go on the big wooden swing.

The market opens from Thursday 17 till Sunday 20 July, every evening from about 7 pm. till late. Find out more about the market by calling 639 979 678 (English spoken) or take a look at Amata’s web page www.amata.es (also in English).
