SPANISH SOCIALISTS ELECT NEW LEADER

Pedro Sánchez

Spain´s socialist PSOE group elected Pedro Sánchez as their new leader at the weekend, following the resignation of Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, announced after a crushing European election defeat.

The 42 year old doctor of economics has a history of work in both international diplomatic and local political roles, Sánchez will now head the party towards the next national and municipal elections next year.

Despite his near Americanized glamorous look and warming presentation skills, Sánchez has ridden off the back of a “down to earth” image, sayin in a statement that, “I am a rank-and-file activist. A year and a half ago I was not a politician”, and emphasising how “My only equipment is my Peugeot 407, in which I have driven 40,000 kilometres in the past eight months, and my allies are the road and party activists”.

Promising to return the PSOE to its grass roots policies of a socialist and worker driven party, Sánchez is seen as a real threat to the current PP government, who have inflicted cuts to public services, reductions in the rights of workers, and forced the country into austerity in a battle to revive the country´s economy.
