There were over 40 traders set up at the Orihuela Costa Craft Fair last weekend on Zenia Boulevard car park hosted by the Orihuela Costa council, and with them they brought plenty for everyone to see.
Visitors could see how ceramics were molded, puppets woven or jewelry hand made by experienced artisans. Indeed everything on show was made by the traders themselves. There were also demonstrations from street performers which kept everyone entertained.
The many crafts on display included engravings and watercolors, artistic ceramics, pottery, wooden toys, puppets and rag or wool dolls. There were ceramic castles and jewelry designed in both porcelain and in silver.
The craft fair was organized by Councillor Martina Scheurer of the Department of European Residents and Playas de Orihuela, through the association of artisans Amata, founded in 1998. This was the first venture into La Zenia by Amata whose traders are all qualified and time served craftsman the main purpose is the creation of opportunities for the individual and talented craftsman to sell his or her products directly to an interested public, so they can go on making beautiful and quality products and so that old crafts stay alive and don’t disappear into museums.
Amata also tries to improve the standards in the street markets and fairs where artesanía is sold, so that people looking for good quality hand made goods know that they can buy them in an (Amata) Craft Fair or Medieval Market.
