AUSCHWITZ LAUNCHES VIRTUAL TOUR

Although the historic significance may tell a harrowing story, the Auschwitz Museum can now be visited from the comfort of your own home, as the museum has just launched a 360-degree virtual tour of one of the most symbolic concentration camps ever to exist.

Though many thousands suffered the atrocities of the Nazi regime, the museum hope that the tour will keep the memory of those who suffered alive, following one of the worst genocides humanity has ever inflicted.

The museum has been built on witness testament and historic accounts from archived documents from the prison, and works of art created by some of the prisoners.

Now, with the virtual tour available on the internet, visitors have the chance to be absorbed in the visual imagery of the museum, though not with the true emotions felt by those who were there, through what museum director Dr. Piotr Ma Cywinski describes as an “educational project”, created from “comprehensive historical information with panoramic photographs”.

Some of the areas on the virtual tour go deeper into the history than actual visitors to the site can go, as many areas are not open to the public. Dr. Piort believes that a visit via the virtual tour can help those coming to the real museum plan their trip, but also explains how “many people will never have the opportunity to experience in person the real Auschwitz, so a virtual tour is a unique opportunity to approach the actual experience of the former camp”.

The new virtual tour of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial includes over 200 high-quality panoramic photographs. The 360⁰ images present the authentic sites and buildings of the former German Nazi concentration and extermination camp, complete with historical descriptions, dozens of witness accounts, archival documents and photographs, artworks created by the prisoners, and objects related to the history of the camp. The tour is available at the museum website, www.auschwitz.org.
