BIKE LANE CONFUSION CAUSES MORE SUFFERING FOR ELDERLY

To park or not to park. Ridiculaous signing by the council

Despite the plaudits, most of which were generated themselves, through press releases from the Orihuela Council, the introduction of a new cycle lane down Calle Fuego, opposite the Cabo Roig Medical centre, running alongside the Marinasol Bar and Restaurant is an absolute nonsense and yet another example of the lack of thought put into urban planning on the Orihuela Costa.

With parking for the aged and infirm in close proximity to the medical centre already in short supply, the former councillor for Mobility and Transport, Manuel Gallud, has now taken away a further 20 free spaces, forcing many of the sick and elderly who regularly attend the centre a much longer walk.

The removal of the spaces comes at the start of the summer and, with the installation of a fairground in the car park directly adjoining the centre, follows the loss of another 20 or so spaces in the area.

Having spoken to local residents and bar owners I understand that the new cycle lane is rarely used despite the orchestration of a couple of cyclists in the images used with the press release.

Or am I getting confused, as judging by the signs that are still in evidence 2 weeks after the opening of the lane, we can still park in it after all?

I suppose it will only be clarified after some poor soul tries to contest the 200 euro fine he got for taking the chance!
