The Guardia Civil in Alicante is looking into someone who may have committed fraud by making fake bitcoin deposits. The victim made the complaint through the Guardia Civil’s online site, the National Office for Electronic Complaint Reception (ON-RED), which is part of the Cyber Command. The Cyber Team then took over the investigation.
The victim followed the advice of someone who claimed to work for the technical support of a well-known cryptocurrency exchange platform. He contacted this person through an ad on social media and made several transfers with the promise of “big profits after making a series of investments in crypto assets.”
The crooks pretended to be the email account of the cryptocurrency trading site described above and used a type of social engineering called “phishing” to commit this crime.
In this case, the “email-phishing” tactic was used, and the armed institute noted in a news release that this strategy made the victim think that his investments “would actually be backed by said platform.”
The Cyber Command’s Team @ did an investigation that led to the solving of this crime. This was done by looking at how easy it was to trace the complainant’s investment capital.
Finally, the Santa Pola Guardia Civil station looked into the accused criminal, who was found taking money out of the scheme at several ATMs in the province of Alicante.
