Pepe Vegara, the Mayor of Orihuela, along with Irene Celdrán, the Councillor for Health, Matías Ruiz, the Councillor for Urban Planning, and Manuel Mestre, the Councillor for the Coast, announced today that the project to build the second health centre in Orihuela Costa is moving forward. This is after the Regional Ministry of Health gave a positive report. This report will help the administrative process move forward by giving the City Council the power to build this healthcare infrastructure. The project will cost almost 10 million euros, which includes building the new health centre and getting the land ready for it. The Councillor for Health said, “Today is an important day for the Orihuela coast and, most importantly, for all the residents who have been waiting a long time for an answer, a solution, and a real commitment to their healthcare.”
Celdrán said that the Orihuela City Council got a good assessment from the Regional Ministry of Health. This means that they can move on with the paperwork needed to build this healthcare centre. “Today we can say that we are still making progress toward making the second health centre on the coast a reality.” “This is a very important step that brings us closer to meeting a long-standing demand and a need that has been on the table for far too long without the response our citizens deserve,” he said.
Celdrán stressed that the new health facility is more than simply a building; it will make healthcare in Orihuela Costa better. “We’re not simply talking about a facility when we talk about a second health centre. We’re talking about peace of mind for our seniors, safety for families, easier access to care, fewer travels, shorter wait times, and more respectful healthcare for everyone who lives on the coast year-round.
He said that the population of Orihuela Costa has risen a lot in the last several years, and that this expansion means that public services, especially healthcare, need to be made stronger. “We know that the coast has grown and that its needs have grown as well. We also know that residents deserve public services that are in line with how important they are to this municipality.”
He also stressed that today’s declaration is not just a formality for the government; it is a big step toward getting the coastal communities the healthcare infrastructure they need. “This announcement isn’t just a formality for the government.” It’s news that talks about the future, justice, and dedication to a core aspect of Orihuela.
The Health Councillor also wished to stress the importance of being responsible about the future steps of the project, saying that there is still work to be done to finish all the essential technical and administrative tasks. “There is still work to be done, and we will keep going with the project in a careful way, making sure that all the technical and administrative requirements are met so that it can move forward safely and soundly.” She went on to say, “This governing team knows that healthcare can’t wait, the coastline can’t wait any longer, and residents need action.”
Matías Ruiz, the Councillor for Urban Planning, talked about the technical details of the project and reminded everyone that the Orihuela City Council has given the Ministry of Health a piece of land in the H1 Villarosa sector of Orihuela Costa that meets the requirements set out in the functional plan made by the regional government for the building of this new health centre.
This is a municipal plot of land that is around 13,000 square metres and is meant for public buildings. It will have adequate room for a health building of about 3,000 square metres and about 300 parking places.
Ruiz said that the Ministry of Health’s positive report contains a projected budget of €8,870,766 for the whole project. €8,180,577 of this cost is for the construction work, while €690,188 is for the technical fees needed to write the project and oversee the construction.
The Councillor for Urban Planning said that the functional plan for the new health centre includes “five general medicine consultation rooms, five nursing consultation rooms, two paediatric consultation rooms with their corresponding paediatric nursing consultation rooms, extraction rooms, a midwife consultation room, a women’s health area, a dental consultation room, radiology, as well as spaces intended for patient care, general services, storage rooms and changing rooms, among others.”
Ruiz said that the project would be carried out with the help of a cooperation agreement between the Valencian Regional Government and the Orihuela City Council. The money for the project will come from the regional government’s budget. The City Council will be responsible for preparing the site and its surroundings, which will entail an estimated municipal investment of around one million euros.
The Councillor for Urban Planning has said that “the aim of the council is to put the drafting of the project out to tender this year, once the delegation of powers by the Ministry of Health is formalised, so that, once the technical project has been drafted, the works can be put out to tender during the year 2027.”
Manuel Mestre, the councillor for the coastal area, has said that the planned investment of close to ten million euros in this new healthcare facility is very good news. He says it will greatly improve healthcare capacity in Orihuela Costa and meet a long-standing demand from residents of this part of the municipality. Mestre said, “This project is another step in the work that the governing team has been doing to give the coast more public services and infrastructure in line with the growth it has seen in recent years.”
Lastly, Pepe Vegara, the mayor of Orihuela, talked about how dedicated the government team is to Orihuela Costa. He said that this region is “one of the jewels of the Orihuela municipality and an amazing place to live.” The mayor said that there is still work to be done after many years when the requirements of this area of the city were not met. However, he said that the City Council is continuously working to make the city’s infrastructure and services better.
Vegara said that the building of the second health centre is one of the government’s plans to keep making Orihuela Costa better. “We will keep working to make sure this part of the municipality has the services it needs, meets the needs of its residents, and moves forward so that Orihuela Costa becomes an even better place to live,” she said in conclusion.
