In Alicante, the National Police have apprehended a Ukrainian citizen who was the subject of a European Arrest Warrant (EAW) issued by the German authorities. The individual is accused of engaging in purported espionage activities that were commissioned by actors located in Russia.
The individual who was apprehended was conducting surveillance on a target in Germany in order to supply drones to Ukraine, according to the General Directorate of the Police.
The detainee had conducted intelligence work in Germany prior to his travels to Spain, as per the investigation conducted by the German Federal Prosecutor’s Office. The subject of this surveillance was a German citizen who was involved in the transportation of drones and technological components to Ukraine during the ongoing conflict.
Additionally, the individual who was apprehended had been collecting sensitive information about the target in a physical and direct manner, as well as through social media.
On Tuesday, March 24th, the National Police arrested the suspect in Alicante, where he had resided. However, it is alleged that a second individual resumed his espionage activities in Germany.
On Monday, special forces and the Bavarian Regional Criminal Investigation Office conducted an operation in the German city of Rheine that resulted in the apprehension of this collaborator, a Romanian national.
Searches were conducted at the residences of both suspects as part of this bilateral operation to extract data from electronic devices and confiscate documentary material. The National Court heard the case of the Spanish citizen who was apprehended this morning.
