He lives in Alicante, but a judge has forbidden him to go there. A 75-year-old British pensioner has been convicted in the UK of molesting a youngster, and the court that heard the case has ruled he will not be allowed to return to Spain while awaiting sentencing.
The case began when the mother of a child found the accused with her daughter inside a caravan. According to her account, she promptly moved to remove the children from the premises, not believing the answers the man tried to give at the moment.
After the guilty finding, the court decided to tighten the terms placed on the offender. According to sources, the judge has also banned him from returning to Alicante and ordered him to submit his passport within 24 hours, obliging him to stay in the United Kingdom until sentence.
The defence sought to maintain the earlier release conditions, claiming that the accused had attended court dates without any problems. But the judge said letting him return to Spain would “complicate” the procedures.
The defendant was convicted of multiple sex offences against a juvenile but acquitted of other counts. During the trial, the prosecution said the man had exploited the victim to gain her trust. The defendant consistently disputed the claims for the whole of the proceedings.
The precise punishment will be handed down at a future hearing, when the relevant reports have been compiled. The courts will determine the scope of the criminal responsibility in a case that has had implications in Alicante, as the defendant’s habitual abode is in this province.
