The Valencian regional government (Generalitat) anticipates that the expansion works at the Vega Baja Hospital in Orihuela will be completed by the end of the year. The objective is to have all of the new services that are planned for the healthcare complex operational by that time. The President of the Generalitat, Juanfran Pérez Llorca, made this announcement yesterday, Tuesday April 21st, during a visit to the facilities. He was accompanied by the Regional Minister of Health, Marciano Gómez, the Mayor of Orihuela, Pepe Vegara, and the Mayor of Almoradí, María Gómez.
The project’s total investment exceeds 82 million euros, as stated by the Valencian government’s chief. He referred to this as “the legislature of new hospitals in the Valencian Community.” He also emphasised that the new main lobby, the Emergency Department platform, the helipad, and the waste management structure, among other improvements that are now operational, have already been completed, totalling 8.5 million euros.
The expansion will result in a 40% increase in the hospital’s surface area, from 36,300 square meters to over 50,000 square metres. The project entails the construction of two new structures that are either attached to or connected to the existing centre.
The mental health unit, the day hospital, and the outpatient clinics will be located in the North facility. The hospital’s medical consultation rooms will be increased from 30 to 98, and its nursing consultation rooms will be increased from 10 to 23. Additionally, the number of endoscopy facilities will be increased from two to five.
The total capacity of the new Day Hospital will be increased from 20 to 32 beds, with an oncology and haematology area containing 16 beds and a multipurpose area containing sixteen beds. Furthermore, 12 new procedure rooms will be included, in addition to a dedicated mental health day facility for adults and children that can accommodate 15 patients.
Meanwhile, the South building will be designated for outpatient procedures. The facility will include a post-anesthesia recovery area, a minor surgery unit, a new sterilisation centre, and a new haemodialysis unit. Additionally, it will contain a major outpatient surgery units.
Additionally, the endeavour encompasses enhanced accessibility, expanded parking areas, and additional outdoor areas. Furthermore, 52 additional hospital beds and weather-related safety measures will be implemented.
Upon the completion of this expansion, the Generalitat intends to implement a second phase of hospital center transformation. This phase will encompass the addition of a new delivery room, the expansion of Emergency, Radiology, and ICU, as well as the establishment of a future Short Stay Unit and a pre-admission unit to expedite hospital admissions.
News regarding the establishment of a new health centre in Orihuela Costa is expected to be released in the near future.
In addition, Pérez Llorca disclosed that the agreement to initiate the construction of the future Orihuela Costa health centre, which is one of the primary healthcare requirements for the Orihuela coastline, will be inked in the near future. Additionally, he stated that there will be forthcoming information regarding the expansion of Torrevieja Hospital.
