Access to the Castillo de Santa Bárbara in Alicante is set to be restricted exclusively to the urban bus shuttle service and taxis starting this coming Monday, 4th May, until 20th May. The measure is being implemented to facilitate the final phase of construction on a new pedestrian connection between the La Ereta car park and the entrance to the fortress.
During this sixteen-day period, all private vehicles will be prohibited from driving up to the castle. The car park at La Ereta will be reserved specifically to allow public transport vehicles to turn around. Residents and visitors can find further updates and details via the ‘Alicante se mueve’ mobile application or the official local mobility website.
The Councillor for Urban Mobility, Carlos de Juan, explained that the closure is necessary for the urbanisation project of the pedestrian path. He noted that during this period, only the CSB bus line and taxis will be permitted access. These vehicles will drop off and collect passengers at the La Ereta car park, meaning visitors must complete the final stretch to the castle on foot.
This prohibition also extends to commercial tourist services, such as “Tuc Tucs” and private minibuses, which will not be allowed to enter.

The project aims to improve the north-western slope of the castle by creating a 4,539-square-metre pedestrian route. This also includes work on a 115-metre trail connecting the main walkway to one of the Benacantil viewpoints. The upgrades will include new paving, landscaped areas, circular benches, and improved lighting, ensuring the path is accessible for those with reduced mobility.
