The Local Police in Elche have carried out 26 inspections on vehicle storage plots located around the Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport, discovering that only 5% of these sites comply with current legislation. This revelation came during a plenary session held this Tuesday, where the City Council announced an order to begin modifying the General Plan of Urban Planning (PGOU). The objective is to regulate the numerous car parks situated near the airport facilities.
The Mayor of Elche, Pablo Ruz, stated that the council will continue to perform inspections and take necessary measures against non-compliant sites. He explained that this initiative is the result of work developed over the last year and aims to establish clear criteria for the installation of vehicle storage in the area. It is estimated that there are currently more than one hundred such plots, many of which are operating in an “alegal” situation without proper permits.
According to the Mayor, the goal is to balance an activity closely linked to the airport with respect for the environment and legal requirements. This follows a model similar to recent modifications applied to photovoltaic installations in the countryside.
However, opposition parties PSOE and Compromís have noted that the process is in its very early stages. They argued that the current administration has only just issued the order for the drafting of the plan, suggesting that the “Plan Rector,” which was based on a public consultation they conducted in 2019, could have been used as a foundation.
