An amber weather warning has been issued for the province of Alicante tomorrow, Tuesday 7th July, due to high temperatures, with maximums of 39 degrees expected on both the northern and southern coastlines. The alert will remain active between 12:00 and 20:00, impacting the interior of the Vega Baja area and the north of the Marina Alta with particular intensity.
This extreme heat episode affects the entirety of the Valencian Community and will reach its most severe levels in Valencia, where Aemet has established a red alert for the southern coast for temperatures that could climb to 44 degrees. Given the situation, the Generalitat has requested that companies, administrations and workers reinforce workplace prevention measures.
The amber warning is concentrated between midday and the evening, a timeframe that is particularly sensitive for outdoor work and activities requiring physical exertion. The Regional Ministry of Employment has reminded businesses that occupational risk prevention regulations dictate that working conditions must be adapted when risks arise from adverse weather events. The Generalitat stressed that this planning must be applied with specific attention to sectors with the highest exposure to thermal stress, including agriculture, construction, industry, transport and hospitality.
The recommended measures include reorganising tasks, adapting timetables and avoiding the hours of maximum sun exposure. The Generalitat also advises taking regular breaks in cool or shaded areas, guaranteeing permanent access to drinking water and reducing tasks requiring heavy physical effort during the middle of the day. For outdoor jobs or unsealable locations, activity may be halted during the highest-risk hours if safety cannot be guaranteed through other preventive steps.
In the city of Alicante, the Ayuntamiento has activated its heatwave protocol, opening the gymnasium of the Centro de Acogida y Urgencias Sociales (CAUS) on Monday and Tuesday from 11:00 to 19:00. This facility provides food, water and a personalised hygiene kit, alongside street-level assistance for the homeless.
In Elche, Aemet has activated the amber level for rising temperatures this Tuesday and Wednesday from 12:00 to 20:00. The Councillor for Health, Inma Mora, has urged the public to follow basic guidelines to prevent heatstroke, such as maintaining constant hydration, staying indoors during peak sun intensity hours and eating a balanced diet rich in fruit and vegetables.
The Ayuntamiento of Elche has advised against outdoor sports activities from 12:00 in sports schools and summer camps. Scheduled sports championships have been cancelled, and public services on the streets are being adjusted. This includes reduced shifts, the cancellation of clearing work on roadsides, ditches and plots, delaying evening beach cleaning and suspending maintenance tasks on bins and containers.
Elche has also activated its protocol for homeless individuals until the amber alert ends. The Fundación Conciénciate will conduct daily outings to provide street care during the hottest hours, from 12:00 to 16:00, and at night, from 19:00 to 22:00, distributing cold water, soft drinks, fruit and food. Furthermore, the local shelter will operate 24 hours a day as a climate refuge, providing meals, showers, laundry facilities and overnight beds, whilst Cáritas is providing an air-conditioned room with refreshments until 20:00, doubling its shower services and boosting street outreach.
